's remember the chuck hagel nomination is another way for the president to signal what he wants with afghanistan withdrawal, which is to get out sooner rather than later. president obama went -- when it comes to the cabinet shuffle, while monday and chuck hagel was about getting a tough confirmation fight and having a tough confirmation fight in the upcoming days, he went for more of a sure thing thursday. he called on his chief of staff, jack lew, to fill the slot at treasury, being vacanted by secretary geithner. lew has gone before the full senate for confirmation more than once in the past four years. he hasn't gotten a no vote yet. and the president doesn't expect one now. >> jack has my complete trust. i know i'm not alone in that. in the words of one former senator, "having lew on your team is the equivalent as a coach the luxury of having somebody in almost any position and knowing he will do well." and i could not agree more. so i hope the senate will confirm him as quickly as possible. >> one thing lew may have to work on, though, if he gets the job, his signature. yes

. they're going to have a tough time i think making the case against chuck hagel who was twice wounded in vietnam as an enlisted man going up against the chicken hawks of the united states senate, and he's not going to take a lot of grief from them. he's a guy who has bled for his country and actually believes that war should be a last resort. it's a novel sentiment perhaps in the senate these days, but i think it will prevail. >> it certainly is. as the president said, war is not an abstraction to this man. ken, you recently reported that several anti-obama groups are going to try to make these nomination battles as permanent as debt ceiling battles. who is it that's behind this though, ken? >> well, in this particular case, the hagel nomination, as well as to an extent the susan rice nomination, which didn't even get off the ground, there are a group of these neoconservative organizations that are all affiliated to some extent with bill kristol, the weekly standard editor, that have spent a fair amount of money but more to the point have really leveraged the media and their own media

to see you, chris. former senator chuck hagel, of course, just nominated for secretary of defense, he would be part of this pull-out. he's a guy that was not in favor of the troop surge, has a controversial side to him in that regard. what do we expect from him? >> reporter: basically, michael, wasn't in favor of the surge in iraq, not quite so critical of the surge in afghanistan. it's a big difference. on the surge in iraq, he called it one of the biggest foren policy blunders since vietnam. chuck hagel was part of the planning for the afghanistan surge under president obama. he consulted with the president's national security adviser and when he gave a speech shortly after that surge was announced didn't have much criticism for president obama, said he was approaching the situation very carefully. so that suggests that his position may be a lot more aligned with president obama on afghanistan than it was during the later years of president bush. >> yeah. president karzai, meeting him, he wants u.s. security personnel to stick around after 2014, that's going happen, but he's highly

speaking with authority, but is this not another good reason for chuck hagel's nomination because he, unlike so many of his fellow republicans, prefers to act cautiously when it comes to these forays over seas? >> well, two things. he prefers to act cautiously using war as a last resort instead of a rather more immediate choice as had been the case over the last decade, but he's also a big supporter of working multilaterally and that's why he had been so critical of the bush administration in iraq. the problem wasn't necessarily that going into afghanistan too quickly. it was that we got distracted for all those years in iraq and let the situation in afghanistan deteriorate. chuck hagel was right at the time in criticizing the bush administration on this. that's why it has long struck me you would want a man who does not want to rush into warfare as a first resort sitting there in charge of the pentagon. >> right. mike, on a slightly broader scale, are you at all concerned that this president's rightful desire to get our troops out of these entrenched and intractable conflicts, that

, 15 years ago he opposed, chuck hagel opposed a nominee that was going to serve in the country of luxembourg as an ambassador, the size of a table, and he opposed him for being aggressively gay and had some tough anti-gay statements to make at the time. yes he apologized but apologized two weeks ago when his name was already being considered for secretary of defense, and yet it's okay to go after the pastor, but it's not okay to go after the nominee for secretary of defense, who is going to be making big and small decisions on a daily basis as we implement the complete repeal of don't ask, don't tell. that i think is inconsistent and verging on hypocriticahypocriti. >> just to be clear giglio pulled out on his own. president obama didn't change his mind and say get out. >> ana brings up a good point. we have to include people's evolving views on this. again i go back to what the reverend said 15 or 20 years ago, he has not disavowed. hagel has absolute disavowed what he said, and a lot of gay rights groups have taken him -- >> two weeks ago, maria, a very convenient evolution.
